Tanning lotion formulas that are DHA based are one the safest forms of indoor tanning products. DHA, or dihydroxyacetone if you prefer, is a sugar that changes the color of your dead cells on the surface of your skin. Because the chemicals do not get into your body past the outer most layer of skin, there is little danger in using the product. Of course there use to be rumors that tanning lotions would turn your skin orange, which was because earlier versions contained too much DHA but today the formula has been refined with lower levels of DHA.

The tan usually will last from five to seven days as dead skin cells are constantly being worn off. In fact, your entire layer of dead cells is replaced approximately every thirty five to forty five days. Most product labels will tell you to reapply every three days to maintain a constant tan.

For some people, using certain brands may cause an allergic reaction of the skin. That seems to be the only risk with these types of product. The reaction will cause skin irritation but its usually a mild case and can be treated with everyday skin irritation creams found in medicine cabinets of most homes.

To avoid an adverse reaction to the specific tanning lotion formula, it is important to sample a small amount but applying it to one small area and leaving it for twenty four hours to test for reactions the first time you use any new product. This would avoid the painful and scary experience of an allergic reaction all over your body just because you forgot to test the lotion in a small area before applying to your whole body.

The tan you achieve through using self-tanning products is not the same tan of a naturally dark skinned person whose tan comes from melanin in the skin which protects the skin from the UV rays.So the tan will not offer any resistance to UV rays the way a natural tan would, since its not real.

Tanning lotions usually do not provide any protection from the sun as sun block would, so if you are going to be outdoors remember to wear sun block as usual.

Most of the indoor tanning lotions today also moisturize which is always a plus for most people. Especially if you will be outdoors, being in the sun dries the skin so its good to have that extra moisture even if its probably not enough. Being in the sun also forces the production of melanin which is the natural way to tan.
